Maybe the best thing that I got out of the Rufus book was discovering the music of his mother and aunt. Their first album is an incredible recording and listening to it for the first time changed the whole direction of the book I had intended to write. I was sad to hear of her passing from the cancer she had battled in recent years. There has been an extraordinary outpouring of tributes from all over the world which may perhaps have been surprising to those who only knew her as being a mother or a wife but to me, it made perfect sense. Kate was an artist in the truest sense of the word. She lived for music and for art and creativity. She was devoted to the song more than anything else except, of course her family. Of all the tributes I have read this one from Rufus, Martha and Anna is particularly beautiful.
